In August 2020, the Palestinian Preventive Security arrested Thaher at night in front of his workplace while leaving An-Najah National University, and he was placed in solitary confinement under intensive investigation for a month and a half on charges of defaming the Palestinian Authority in his TV works.
Some Palestinian activists, human rights defenders, and journalists organized intense protests against the arrest of Thaher by the Palestinian Authority in August and September 2020, as well as against the harsh conditions of his detention and the deterioration of his health. They stood in front of the court building in Nablus and in front of the Palestinian Prime Minister's office in Ramallah.
Thaher's arrest has become a topic of public discussion on social media, as well as in Palestinian, Arab , and foreign media. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights monitored the case, along with international human rights organizations. At that time, the Palestinian Authority was accused of violating rights to expression and opinion and fabricating charges against political activists and opposition journalists, which compelled the court to conditionally release Thaher in September 2020 and allow his trial to proceed under the Cybercrime Law.
Less than a month after Thaher's release from Palestinian Authority prisons, an Israeli army force arrested him from his home in Nablus in October 2020 and interrogated him about his TV work outside of Palestine. A month later, the Israeli court decided to release him
In January 2022, after a year and a half of the trial, the Nablus Court sentenced Thaher to prison on charges of defaming the Palestinian Authority.
This sentence caused significant reactions among journalists and activists, as well as the intervention of international human rights organizations to protect Thaher and halt the execution of the sentence.
They wrote to the leadership of the Palestinian Authority to stop the attacks on him and other journalists and cease violations against the political opposition.
As a result, the implementation of the ruling was suspended until the legal team was able to file an appeal against the ruling, and Thaher obtained a verdict of complete acquittal of all charges against him, issued by the Court of Appeal after a trial that lasted two years.
